The free trap
Let me say something nice about HubSpot first: their free CRM is the best free CRM on the market. If you're a three-person startup tracking fifty deals, it's fantastic. I recommend it to people all the time — for that specific situation.
Here's the trap: "free" has a half-life. The moment you need sales sequences, or custom reporting, or a second pipeline, or more than the basics of automation, you're on a paid tier. And HubSpot's paid tiers are priced like enterprise software wearing a startup costume.
A 10-person sales team on HubSpot Sales Hub Professional: roughly $900/user/month at list. That's $108,000 a year. For a CRM. Let that sink in.
The Odoo side of the ledger
Odoo's pricing is almost boring by comparison: one flat per-user-per-month price for ALL apps. CRM, Sales, Inventory, Accounting, Email Marketing, Helpdesk — everything. As of my writing, that's in the $30-40/user/month range depending on hosting.
Same 10-person team: roughly $4,000-5,000 a year. Total. For the CRM plus every other app.
I'm not cherry-picking — this is the standard price list, and the math isn't close. Even if you add implementation costs (and you should budget for proper Odoo implementation), you're ahead by year two in most cases I've modeled.
But it's not just price
If this were only about money, it'd be a boring article. The deeper difference is architectural.
HubSpot is a marketing platform that grew a CRM. It's brilliant at top-of-funnel: forms, email sequences, lead scoring, content. If your business lives and dies by inbound marketing volume, HubSpot's gravity is real.
Odoo is an operations platform that includes a CRM. The moment a deal closes in Odoo, it becomes a sales order, which becomes a delivery, which becomes an invoice — no integrations, no sync errors, no "the CRM says one thing and accounting says another." For businesses that sell physical stuff or deliver projects, that native flow is worth more than any email sequence feature.
The question isn't "which CRM is better." It's "where does your business actually live?" Marketing-led motion → HubSpot deserves a real look. Operations-led business → Odoo's integrated model wins going away.
The integration tax nobody budgets
Here's the hidden line item: HubSpot doesn't do inventory. It doesn't do accounting. It doesn't do purchasing. So every HubSpot shop eventually buys or builds integrations to their ERP or accounting system.
I've seen the invoices. A HubSpot-to-ERP integration project runs $15,000-50,000, and then you maintain it forever — every API change, every field mapping, every "why didn't the invoice sync" ticket. With Odoo, that integration cost is zero because there's nothing to integrate. It's one database.
When I do total-cost modeling for clients, I make them add three years of integration maintenance to the HubSpot column. It changes the conversation every time.
When HubSpot actually wins
Intellectual honesty requires me to say when I'd pick HubSpot:
- You're a marketing-led SaaS or services company with heavy inbound volume and sophisticated nurturing needs. HubSpot's marketing automation is genuinely best-in-class.
- Your team already lives in HubSpot and switching costs exceed the savings. Don't rip out working systems for spreadsheet victories.
- You need best-of-breed marketing analytics that Odoo's simpler tools can't match. Fair.
Notice what's not on the list: "we're small so we need something simple." Odoo CRM's interface is clean and modern. The learning curve argument is mostly legacy reputation at this point.
The migration nobody fears (but should plan)
Moving CRMs is like moving houses — the concept is simple, the execution is where marriages end. Deduplicate your contacts BEFORE migration, not after. Map your pipeline stages deliberately instead of importing chaos. And run both systems in parallel for two weeks minimum.
The companies that botch CRM migrations botch them the same way: they treat it as a data project instead of a change project. The data part is easy. Getting ten salespeople to actually use the new system is the job.
Frequently asked questions
Is Odoo CRM really free?
Odoo's community edition is open-source and free to self-host. Most businesses use Odoo's hosted version (Odoo.sh or Odoo Online) at a flat per-user price that includes all apps — still dramatically cheaper than HubSpot's paid tiers.
Can Odoo do email sequences like HubSpot?
Yes — Odoo's Email Marketing and Marketing Automation apps handle sequences, drip campaigns, and lead nurturing. It's not as deep as HubSpot's enterprise marketing suite, but it covers what most SMBs actually use.
How hard is it to migrate from HubSpot to Odoo?
The data migration is straightforward (CSV imports handle contacts, companies, and deals). The real work is pipeline redesign and user training. Budget 4-8 weeks for a 10-person team done properly.
Does Odoo integrate with the tools we already use?
Odoo has native connectors and API integrations for common tools (email, VoIP, e-commerce platforms). Anything HubSpot connects to via Zapier, Odoo can typically match — plus the ERP-native depth HubSpot can't touch.
