Dead Brand Stuff
Reviving the brands of yesterday, building the businesses of tomorrow. For good companies whose story stopped being true somewhere around 2014.
Here’s a pattern I see constantly: a company with a solid business, real customers, and real revenue — telling the world a story that hasn’t been accurate in a decade. The website reads like a time capsule. The messaging talks to a customer who doesn’t exist anymore. The marketing, if there is any, is a sporadic burst of “we should post something” followed by six months of silence.
That’s a dead brand walking. The business is alive; the brand is on life support. And it costs you — in deals you never hear about because a prospect Googled you and moved on, in talent that picked the competitor with the better story, in pricing power you surrendered because you look like a commodity.
Dead Brands, LLC exists to fix that. Not with a logo redesign and a prayer — with positioning that’s actually true, messaging that says something, and a content engine that ships every single week.
Does this sound familiar?
Your website is a time capsule. It describes the company you were a decade ago — the services you’ve outgrown, the customers you don’t chase anymore, the headshots from two rebrands back. Prospects visit, get the wrong idea, and move on. I rewrite the story to match the business you actually run today, in words your best customers would recognize.
Prospects keep misunderstanding what you do. Every first call starts with ten minutes of “so what exactly is it you…?” That confusion is costing you deals you never hear about — the ones where they just Googled, got confused, and clicked the competitor. One sharp positioning sentence, carried consistently through every page and pitch, ends the confusion.
You lose deals to competitors with better stories. Not better products, not better service — better stories. They look sharper, sound clearer, and show up everywhere while you’re invisible. Brand is pricing power: the company with the clearer story wins the tie, charges more, and gets the benefit of the doubt. I build you the story and the engine that tells it, so you stop losing on narrative.
Your marketing runs in bursts, then goes silent. A flurry of posts when someone panics, then six months of nothing. Sporadic marketing doesn’t compound — it just reminds the market you exist, briefly, at random. I build the publishing rhythm your team can actually sustain: blog, social, email, shipping every week without anyone becoming a full-time content creator.
Good people pick the competitor. Talent Googles you too. When your brand looks tired, the ambitious hires — the ones with options — go where the story is alive. A brand that sounds like the future attracts people building the future. Reviving the brand isn’t vanity; it’s recruiting, pricing power, and deal flow in one move.
What this actually is
Brand revival, the way I do it, has three layers — and you need all three, in order:
1. Positioning. Who are you, for whom, and why should they care? Most companies can’t answer this in one sentence without hedging. We fix that first, because everything downstream — the website, the sales deck, the content — is just positioning with a costume on.
2. Messaging. The actual words. Your homepage, your about page, your elevator pitch, the way your sales team describes what you do when nobody’s watching. Plain-spoken, specific, memorable. No “solutions provider” throat-clearing.
3. The content engine. This is where most brand work dies. A beautiful new story that nobody ever tells is just an expensive secret. I build you a publishing rhythm — blog, social, email — that ships consistently without requiring your team to become content creators on top of their day jobs.
What’s included
- Positioning work: one sharp sentence about who you are, for whom, and why it matters
- Messaging overhaul: homepage, key pages, and sales language rewritten in words humans use
- Content engine build: a weekly publishing rhythm for blog + social that your team can actually sustain
- Brand voice guide: how you sound, with examples — so anyone writing for you stays on-voice
- Story inventory: the customer stories, founder stories, and proof points you’ve been sitting on
- Distribution plan: where the content goes and why — no spray-and-pray
Who it’s for
Companies with a good business and a tired brand. If your operation runs well but your marketing looks like an afterthought, if prospects keep misunderstanding what you do, if your best customers found you despite your website rather than because of it — that’s the profile.
It’s not for companies that need a quick coat of paint. If the business itself is broken, fix that first — see Small Business Growth. Brand work amplifies what’s real. It can’t invent it.
FAQ
Is this just a rebrand / new logo?
No. Logos are the last 5%. This is positioning, messaging, and a content engine — the story and the machine that tells it. If your logo genuinely needs work we’ll talk about it, but nobody ever lost a deal because of a font.
How is this different from hiring a marketing agency?
Agencies sell you campaigns. I build you the foundation campaigns need to work: who you are, what you say, and a rhythm of publishing that doesn’t die the month the agency contract ends. I’m also the guy running the ERP and growth side of the house, so the brand story stays connected to how the business actually runs.
Do I need to become a content creator?
No. The engine is designed so it doesn’t depend on you finding spare hours you don’t have. We build the rhythm around your real capacity — and around content that comes from the work you’re already doing, not extra homework.
What if my brand is fine and my marketing is the problem?
Then we skip straight to the content engine and distribution. The positioning work is a diagnostic first — if the story is solid, we don’t fix what isn’t broken. See Marketing Expert for the pure-marketing side.
How long does a brand revival take?
The positioning and messaging work — the sharp sentence, the rewritten pages, the voice guide — moves fast, usually weeks. The content engine takes a quarter to find its rhythm and start compounding. Anyone promising an overnight rebrand is selling you a logo. I’m selling you a story the market actually believes, and belief takes consistent repetition. That’s what the engine is for.
Your brand doesn’t have to stay dead.
Thirty minutes. I’ll tell you straight whether it’s the brand, the marketing, or the business.
